Common Data Engineer Interview Questions and Answers
Data engineer interviews tend to repeat the same core topics across companies: data modeling, pipeline design, SQL, and how you'd approach a larger system end to end. Here's a practical set of the questions that come up most often, with concise answers you can build on.
Data modeling questions
Q: What's the difference between a star schema and a snowflake schema?
A star schema has a central fact table connected directly to denormalized dimension tables, which is faster to query but duplicates some data. A snowflake schema normalizes those dimension tables further into sub-dimensions, saving storage at the cost of more joins and slightly more complex queries.
Q: What's the difference between a fact table and a dimension table?
A fact table stores measurable events (a sale, a click, an order) along with foreign keys to related dimensions. A dimension table stores descriptive context about those events (customer details, product details, dates) that you'd filter or group by.
Pipelines and ETL/ELT questions
Q: What's the difference between ETL and ELT?
ETL transforms data before loading it into the destination system. ELT loads raw data first and transforms it afterward, inside the destination (commonly a cloud data warehouse). ELT has become more common as warehouses have gotten powerful enough to handle transformation directly.
Q: How would you handle a pipeline that fails partway through?
A good answer covers idempotency (can the job safely re-run without duplicating data), checkpointing or partial-success tracking (so you don't have to redo everything), and alerting (so a failure is noticed quickly rather than silently producing stale data downstream).
Q: Batch vs. streaming — how do you decide which to use?
Batch processing is simpler and usually cheaper, and fits use cases where some delay (minutes to hours) is acceptable. Streaming is needed when downstream systems genuinely require near-real-time data — fraud detection or live dashboards are common examples — at the cost of added architectural complexity.
SQL and performance questions
SQL comes up in almost every data engineer interview, often as its own dedicated round. We cover this in full depth separately in Common SQL Interview Questions and Answers, including window functions, joins, and query optimization — all of which are fair game here too.
Data system design questions
Q: Design a pipeline to ingest and serve daily sales data for a reporting dashboard.
A strong answer walks through the full path: where the raw data originates, how it's ingested (batch job, streaming, or change-data-capture), where it lands (a raw/staging layer before any transformation), how it's modeled for the dashboard's actual query patterns, and how you'd monitor data freshness and quality along the way. Interviewers are generally listening for this end-to-end structure, not a single "correct" tool choice.
Behavioral questions specific to data engineering
- "Tell me about a time a pipeline broke in production and how you diagnosed it."
- "Describe a time you had to deal with messy or inconsistent source data."
- "How have you handled a disagreement with a stakeholder about data definitions?"

FAQ
Do I need to know a specific cloud provider's tools for a data engineer interview?
It depends on the company's stack, but interviewers generally care more about whether you understand the underlying concept (partitioning, orchestration, batch vs. streaming) than whether you've used their exact vendor's product before.
How technical should my answer to a system design question be?
Specific enough to show you understand real tradeoffs — storage format, partitioning strategy, how you'd handle schema changes — rather than a purely high-level answer with no concrete decisions in it.
Is SQL knowledge really tested this heavily for data engineering roles?
Yes, consistently — SQL is still the most common way data engineers are expected to query, validate, and debug data, regardless of which other tools are in the stack.
